What if remote learning didn’t have to be so painful? Use these tips to help make remote learning easier for your kids (and parents!)

Parents, we have been thrust into this idea of remote learning with almost no warning. As a full-time working mom myself, balancing work, housework, helping the kids, and more can be stressful if not impossible sometimes.
For some of you, remote learning is going to be a reality that isn’t going away for some time. To help make this transition easier this time around, here are some tips that you parents can use to help remote learning with your kids!

Setting Up a Remote Learning Workspace for Kids
Your kids might find it hard to feel like they’re in school when working from a desk at home. One way you can help is by setting up a remote learning workspace for your kids! Creating a dedicated workspace for your child will help make their school work easier and help them shift into an education mindset.

- Choose a location that has little or no distractions. Start with a clean work surface that has little or nothing on the desk. If you can, try and put this space in a quiet room with little sights and sounds that can disrupt them. If you are short on space, you could also use areas of your home that don’t get a lot of use, such as a corner or hallway for a little workspace nook.
- Decorate and personalize the space. Let your child get involved in decorating the space! You don’t want them to be distracting, but personalizing the space can help get them excited to work on their schoolwork!
- Have all your supplies organized and on hand - (that’s where our Mobile Homework Station comes in!) Having everything in one easy to find workspace will make getting their work done, and clean up, so much easier! My mobile homework station is perfect for remote learning because you can take this wherever your child needs to go! If it’s a nice day outside, you can take it outside to work out there or bring it to the dining room table to get their schoolwork done!
How Can Parents Help Remote Learning?
- Establish a routine right away with your kids. The best thing you can do is create a classroom environment for your kids right at home. Start by establishing a routine of when you will have them work on assignments, and when they should be doing homework or other hands-on activities. Don’t wait until you’ve got the email that your kids will be learning from home to start!
- Stay connected with your child(ren)'s teacher(s). Talk with your child’s teachers about their work performance, and connect with them often! Just because you can’t go to them in person for a parent-teacher conference doesn’t mean you can’t have one over Zoom or Google Hangouts.
- Begin and end each day by checking in with your child. Remote learning is just as hard on your kids as it is for you, the parent! Start each day by checking in with your child to see how they’re doing. Make sure to do this at the end of each day to make sure they aren’t falling behind or don’t need a mental break.
- Encourage both physical activity and quiet time. Just because your child may be working on their own doesn’t mean they are getting the whole school time package. Make sure that you leave ample time for physical activity and quiet time for your kids. This will allow them to unwind after a long day of work and get moving after sitting around all day in the house. You can even schedule these into your routine, so you don’t have to wonder whether or not your child got any rest or activity that day.
