At our house, once school starts up again, every evening is a blur of activity from homework to sports and trying to squeeze in a decent meal. That's why I love using my crock pot to get yummy and healthy meals on the table without having to slave over the stove.

The other thing I love is take out, but let's face it, we can't have take out every night of the week. So that's where my Slow Cooker Beef and Broccoli recipe comes in... it's so flavorful and perfect for a quick meal. This recipe so very tasty that it made our top recipes of 2018 list!

    💭 Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some questions (and answers!) readers often ask about this recipe.

What is beef and broccoli sauce made of?

This delicious sauce is made from beef stock, sesame oil, brown sugar, garlic, soy sauce and corn starch, which thickens the sauce.

What can I use instead of sesame oil?

Use canola or sunflower oil in place of sesame oil. Here are some other substitutes for sesame oil you might like to try.

How do you make beef and broccoli gluten free?

Use a gluten-free soy sauce and serve over a bed of cauliflower rice.

Image contains ingredients needed to make beef and broccoli.

    🧂 Ingredients

    • Stew beef
    • Beef broth or stock
    • Sesame oil
    • Broccoli
    • White or brown rice, or noodles for serving
    • From the pantry: light OR dark brown sugar, fresh garlic cloves, soy sauce (or low sodium soy sauce), and corn starch.

Stew beef is perfect for recipes that cook low and slow and I highly recommend it for slow cooking recipes. Another great recipe to make with stew meat is Beef Tips and Gravy.

However, if you prefer a different cut of beef, you can use a pound of flank steak, cut across the grain into thin slices.

    🔪Instructions

This is meant to be a brief overview of the slow cooker broccoli beef recipe. For step-by-step instructions and a full printable recipe card with ingredients, please scroll down to the teal box below or Jump to Recipe.

    1. In a mixing bowl, whisk together the beef stock, sesame oil, soy sauce, brown sugar and minced garlic.
    2. Add the beef to the slow cooker crock and pour the liquid over the top, tossing the beef to coat.
    3. Set the slow cooker to cook for 4 hours on LOW heat.
    4. When the meat is tender, remove a ¼ cup of the sauce and put in into a small bowl.  Add the cornstarch to the sauce and whisk with a fork to combine and make a slurry.
    5. Slowly drizzle the cornstarch mixture to the slow cooker and stir into the sauce.
    6. Add the broccoli florets to the slow cooker and cover.
    7. Cook for another 30 minutes on low so the sauce will thicken and the broccoli will cook.
    8. Season with salt and pepper as desired.

Hi Debbie, yes, flank steak is a great choice for this recipe because it will benefit from being cooked low and slow!

I am going to make this recipe. Just wondering if I could use frozen broccoli florets?

Hi Linda, you can absolutely use frozen broccoli. I'm not sure exactly how long it would take so I would add it but then check on it about 20 minutes later and adjust the time accordingly.

I made this tonight for my family of picky eaters (myself included), and everyone loved it. Instead of using frozen broccoli, we steamed fresh broccoli and added at the end. Easy and delicious. We will definitely continue to make!
