💭 Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some questions (and answers!) readers often ask about this making your own charcuterie boards.

What is a charcuterie board?

“Charcuterie” is a French term that refers to a mix of snacks, typically meats, cheeses, fruits and nuts, and so many other yummy foods that are presented on a large platter board that guests can help themselves to while socializing.

The options of foods positioned on a charcuterie board really depend on who you’re catering to and the special occasion being celebrated. For this reason, you can create themed charcuterie boards for Halloween, 4th of July, or merely include snacks that are typical to a particular season such as my Baked Brie with Cranberry Sauce for this Thanksgiving Charcuterie Board!

How do I keep my apple slices from turning brown?

It’s going to be in your best interest to prepare your apple slices as close to the serving of this Thanksgiving charcuterie board as possible since cut apple slices are notorious for turning brown fairly quickly.

To help prolong the browning, prepare a bowl with water and the lemon juice from an entire lemon. Place the apple slices into the bowl for 5 minutes, after which you need to transfer them to a clean dish towel. Pat the apple slices gently in order to dry them and then add them to your charcuterie board.

🔪Instructions

It’s really not much work at all to put together a beautiful charcuterie board.

  1. Allow a space in the center of the board to set the Baked Brie with Cranberry Sauce. I recommend baking that at the very last moment before serving.
  2. Add small bowls to hold the granola, and any nuts or fruits you want to include.
  3. Next, place the pieces of bread and crackers down.
  4. Build off of that and add the cheeses and fruit.
  5. Fill in any empty spaces with the smaller ingredients like the nuts and dried fruit.
  6. Cover the board with plastic wrap and keep it refrigerated until it is time to serve.

⭐ Tips

✔️To prep ahead of time, I recommend slicing your different cheeses (or purchasing pre-sliced hard cheese). Store them in the refrigerator in an airtight container until it is time to build your board.

✔️It’s a good idea to find all the items you’ll need for your board such as a small bowl and cheese knives for soft cheeses a day before so you’re not scrambling around when you’re trying to make Thanksgiving dinner.

✔️When arranging your board, keep bread and crackers from getting soggy by keeping them away from things like fruit, which has some natural moisture.

✔️If you’re starting to run out of room, nothing says you can’t create a second board! This works well too if you have guests with allergies or food sensitivities to consider.

📖 Variations

You can customize this to create your own perfect charcuterie board with your favorite cheeses, seasonable fruit, pumpkin seeds, dark chocolate, or whatever else you like. There really is no wrong way to put together this easy thanksgiving appetizer.

Here are some other recipes you might like to include on your board, all of which can be made a day or two ahead of time:

Dessert Board

You could also make a smaller board with a few sweets to add to your dessert table like Mini Pies, or Mini Apple Pie Tarts would also be lovely on a dessert-themed board.

By far one of our most popular recipes this year has to be our Pumpkin Cheesecake Truffles. These white chocolate-dipped tasty treats with spice cake, cream cheese, and pumpkin puree are totally worth the effort and can also be made ahead of time!

You might also like our Chocolate Hummus Recipe or Brown Sugar Yogurt Fruit Dip with fresh fruits like apple and pear slices. Be sure to include some small serving spoons for your dips.

🍴 Serving Suggestions

When you are ready to display your Thanksgiving Charcuterie Board, remove the plastic wrap, and set the Baked Brie with Cranberry Sauce in the center.

Place your board in an area that’s easily accessible by guests and be sure to include some small plates and napkins on the side.

I love serving cranberry sangria or pomegranate punch for the holidays, too.

⏲️ Storage

Store your fully assembled Thanksgiving Charcuterie board in the refrigerator, wrapped tightly in plastic wrap to prevent the foods from drying out and/or absorbing other odors in the fridge, for no longer than 24 hours in advance. Only add dry ingredients that could get wet from storage i.e. crackers just prior to serving.

Leftover snacks from the Thanksgiving Charcuterie Board should be stored in separate containers in the refrigerator to be used for other meals throughout the week.
