This fabulous shortcut tiramisu dessert requires no eggs or alcohol, making it a family-friendly treat!

Traditional Tiramisu is a classic Italian dessert with rich cream made with mascarpone cheese, a touch of coffee liqueur, and soft coffee-flavored ladyfingers. It is both sweet and bitter because of the cocoa powder and coffee.

The translation for the word tiramisu is “pick me up” or “cheer me up.” These mini tiramisu cups may not be the classic tiramisu the Italian master chef Lidia Bastianich would serve, but they will definitely put a smile on your face!

Instructions

There are three main components for making this easy dessert recipe, the ladyfingers, the creamy filling, and the extras.

  1. Start by chilling the bowl and whisk attachment for your electric mixer in the refrigerator for 20 minutes. (This helps the cream to whip properly.)
  2. In the meantime, combine the cooled coffee and hazelnut syrup.
  3. Into the chilled bowl, add the heavy cream, vanilla extract, and sugar and beat until it thickens.
  4. Gently fold the room-temperature mascarpone cheese into the whipped cream mixture.
  5. In the bottom of each of your dessert cups, add one teaspoon of chocolate sauce and swirl it around the bottom of the glasses (this is optional).
  6. Dip the lady fingers into the coffee mixture and place them into the glass.
  7. Add a layer of mascarpone cream and a drizzle of chocolate sauce.
  8. Then add a second layer of soaked lady fingers and whipped cream.
  9. Garnish with a dusting of cocoa powder, a drizzle of chocolate syrup, and chopped hazlenuts, if desired.

This no bake dessert should be served chilled.

Frequently Asked Questions

What type of alcohol is normally used in Tiramisu?

It is not necessary to include alcohol in tiramisu, however, many recipes often call for rum, brandy, or other liqueur.
For flavoring, I am using good quality pure vanilla extract along with Torani Puremade Hazlenut Syrup.

What can I substitute for Mascarpone Cheese in Tiramisu?

Replacing mascarpone cheese with cream cheese can work, but it will not have quite the same flavor or texture. Mascarpone has a higher fat content than cream cheese. Whipped low-fat ricotta can be used instead of mascarpone as well, however, ricotta is not as rich or smooth.

Can I use soft ladyfingers in tiramisu?

The traditional recipe uses the crisp sweet Italian savoiardi biscuits. You’ll find the crunchy cookies in the cookie aisle.
Ladyfingers are sponge cake that are shaped like, well, fingers. If you can’t find the biscuits, you can use the soft ladyfingers from the bakery section of your grocery store.
In order to make sure your tiramisu isn’t soggy, you’ll want to crisp up the sponge cake. To make them crunchy, place them on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet in a 180-degree F oven for ten minutes before you soak them with the coffee-hazelnut liquid.

Does tiramisu have raw eggs?

The traditional recipe typically calls for raw egg yolks as part of the cream, however, this recipe does not contain any eggs.

The first time I had tiramisu was in a little Italian restaurant with my grandmother when I was a teenager. While she enjoyed it, I remember distinctly not liking the tiramisu because I wasn’t used to the flavors of coffee and liqueur.

These days my palate has grown up and I adore all things coffee-flavored (except actual coffee!) To boot, I’ll try just about anything with a mocha flavor. Today’s tiramisu cups dessert is an easy recipe that is impressive for company, but super quick to whip up.

  1. This looks SO good. Will this work if I combine it into 1 bigger recipe in 1 big triffle bowl? Say, for a crowd rather than doing multiple mini cups? And would decaf coffee work (kids)?

    1. This can absolutely be made in a large trifle bowl – you’ll want to probably double the recipe. Decaf is perfectly fine, you’re looking for the coffee flavor, not necessarily the caffeine 🙂
Let me know how it comes out!

Oh my goodness, this recipe is so amazing!!! I made it for Thanksgiving and my sister and my mother-in-law both asked for the recipe – thank you!!
