I love every single thing about Fall in New England (except that it leads to winter).  The weather is perfect with cool crisp mornings and warm sunny afternoons.  And the flavors of Fall just can't be beat - apples, pumpkins and lots of cinnamon! It's so simple and makes a wonderful gift, too!

Apple Pie Spice is one of those things that is great to have on hand for seasoning all kinds of delicious goodies. I love baking with fresh apples and also applesauce, and this is the great addition for that tasty apple flavor.

While you can purchase pre-made mixes from your local grocery store, they're really overpriced. You can buy good quality spices and make your own mixes in just a few minutes.

    🧂 Ingredients

These are the spices I use to make my own apple pie spice mix:

    • ground cinnamon
    • all spice
    • nutmeg (I prefer to purchase whole nutmegs and grate it myself but store-bought ground nutmeg is good also.)
    • ground ginger
    • cardamom

    🔪Instructions

This is meant to be a brief overview of the recipe. For step-by-step instructions and a full printable recipe card with ingredients, please scroll down to the teal box below or Jump to Recipe.

    1. Measure the spices into a small bowl.
    2. Combine the spices by very gently mixing them together with a fork or small whisk.
    3. Use a funnel to transfer the mixture into a small mason jar.

    💭 Frequently Asked Questions

Is apple pie spice the same as pumpkin pie spice?

Pumpkin spice and apple pie spice are similar, but not exactly the same.  They both contain cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger, but pumpkin pie spice also includes cloves and does not include cardamom or allspice.

What is the flavor of cardamom?

Cardamom has a deep warm flavor similar to cinnamon. It can be quite overpowering so use cardamom sparingly.

What is the flavor of ground ginger?

Ground ginger pairs well with nutmeg and cardamom because it's a warm spice that has a lemony hint.

    🍴 Serving Suggestions

Once you make this apple pie spice blend, you're going to want to use it on everything! It's perfect for sprinkling onto French toast, smoothie bowls, or just plain toast. You can also use apple pie spice in one of these great apple recipes:

    • Apple Spice Bundt Cake - deliciously moist and flavorful.

    📖 Variations

We recommend that you try our recipe for the first time just as it is written for the best results, because that is how the recipe has been tested.

However, the next time you make it, you might consider one of these different ways of making this great recipe.

    • Some apple pie spice recipes use ground cloves. You can add ½ teaspoon for a hint of cloves, or 1 teaspoon for more flavor.

    ⏲️ Storage

To keep your easy homemade apple pie spice mix fresh, store it in an airtight container away from direct sunlight. Obviously. in your spice cabinet at room temperature is just fine.

This recipe makes about ¾ of a cup. I like to take ½ cup and package it into a 4oz mason jar, add a ribbon and pretty gift tag. I give them as a gift with some fresh apples and one of my recipe cards during the holiday season. The rest fits nicely into an airtight jar like these small spice containers.
