For as long as I can remember, I have loved apple pie (and pumpkin pie, and sweet potato pie...you get the picture). With my birthday in October, I can even remember a year or two where we celebrated with an apple pie instead of cake. Perhaps my three sisters were disappointed, but I remember it with a smile.

My mother is an incredible cook. Everything she makes is completely amazing. Part of what makes her food so special is the care and thought and, yes love, she puts into it. Even something as simple as a sandwich becomes elevated when Mumma is making it.

I don't quite have moms touch in the kitchen, but I am honing my craft and becoming a better cook... a better mother, too, each day.

This isn't my mom's recipe, but it's close.  I love this apple pie recipe because it is simple but reminds me that sometimes the simple things are best... And that even simple can be extraordinary when there is love.

    🧂 Ingredients

    • Prepared pie crust
    • All-purpose flour
    • Granualted sugar
    • Light brown sugar
    • Cinnamon
    • Nutmeg
    • Salt
    • Apples
    • Butter
    • Egg

    🔪Instructions

This is meant to be a brief overview of our Southern Apple Pie recipe. For step-by-step instructions and a full printable recipe card with ingredients, please scroll down to the teal box below or Jump to Recipe.

    1. Preheat the oven to 425-degrees.
    2. In a large mixing bowl, toss the apples with the dry ingredients. Let them sit while preparing the crust.
    3. Roll the pie crust out to 10" and place into the bottom of the pie dish.
    4. Spoon the apple mixture into the prepared pie plate.
    5. Cut the butter into small pieces and place on top of the apple mixture.
    6. Roll the top crust piece out to 10" and make any design cuts you may like.
    7. Place on top of the the apple mixture, then crimp the edges with your fingers.
    8. Beat the egg in a small bowl.
    9. Brush the top of the pie with the egg wash, and use the egg wash to place any pieces of cut crust you have.
    10. Lightly spray your Baking Pie Crust Shield and place over the pie. Put the pie on a foil lined baking sheet and bake for 30 minutes. Remove the shield, brush again with egg wash (if needed), and bake for another 15-20 minutes until golden brown and the apple mixture is bubbling through the cut-outs.
    11. Remove to a cooling rack and let set for 10-15 minutes before cutting.

YES!! Apple season to me too. Not ready for pumpkin. I would choose apple any day over pumpkin. Ha!! Your pie looks delicious.
