I love every single thing about Fall in New England (except that it leads to winter). The weather is perfect with cool crisp mornings and warm sunny afternoons. And the flavors of Fall just can't be beat - apples, pumpkins and lots of cinnamon! It's so simple and makes a wonderful gift, too!
Apple Pie Spice is one of those things that is great to have on hand for seasoning all kinds of delicious goodies. I love baking with fresh apples and also applesauce, and this is the great addition for that tasty apple flavor.
While you can purchase pre-made mixes from your local grocery store, they're really overpriced. You can buy good quality spices and make your own mixes in just a few minutes.
🧂 Ingredients
These are the spices I use to make my own apple pie spice mix:
- ground cinnamon
- all spice
- nutmeg (I prefer to purchase whole nutmegs and grate it myself but store-bought ground nutmeg is good also.)
- ground ginger
- cardamom

Apple pie spice is a blend of ground cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, all spice, and cardamom.
Cardamom has a deep warm flavor similar to cinnamon. It can be quite overpowering so use cardamom sparingly.
Ground ginger pairs well with nutmeg and cardamom because it's a warm spice that has a lemony hint.
Apple pie spice can be used in just about any sweet apple recipe that calls for cinnamon.
Replace it 1:1, for example, if the recipe calls for 2 teaspoons of cinnamon, use 2 teaspoons of apple pie spice.

This recipe makes about ¾ of a cup. I like to take ½ cup and package it into a 4oz mason jar, add a ribbon, and a pretty gift tag. I give them as a gift with some fresh apples and one of my recipe cards during the holiday season. The rest fits nicely into an airtight jar like these small spice containers.
