These tasty peppermint bombs are so much fun to enjoy on a cold winter day. They also make wonderful gifts for teachers, neighbors, coaches, delivery drivers, and anyone else in your life that could use a little sweet treat this holiday season.

🧂 Ingredients

  • white chocolate melts (or white chocolate bar)
  • peppermint candies
  • sprinkles (optional)

For the hot chocolate mix: granulated sugar, cocoa powder, peppermint candies

🔪 Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, combined the ingredients of the powdered cocoa mix; set aside.
  2. Melt the chocolate in a microwave-safe bowl, according to the instructions on the package.
  3. Coat the inside of the molds with chocolate using the back of a spoon or a pastry brush.
  4. Place the tray of half spheres in the fridge to harden, then add a second layer of chocolate and allow that to harden.
  5. Divide the cocoa mix into half the chocolate molds.
  6. Use a hot plate or small warm skillet to melt the edges of each sphere, then stick them together.
  7. Use a piping bag to drizzle additional chocolate over the top and add crushed candies and sprinkles.

Tips for Making Peppermint Hot Chocolate Bombs

  • In my opinion, good-quality chocolate melts are worth the extra expense. After all, If you’re taking the time to make your own hot cocoa bombs, I think you should use the best ingredients you can afford – especially if you’re gifting them!
  • Pop the peppermint candies into a food processor and pulse 3-4 times to quickly crush the candies. Alternatively, put them into a resealable bag and use a rolling pin to crush them.
  • Before starting, make sure the silicone tray is completely clean and dry.
  • Set the mold onto a plate, tray, or cutting board so you have a solid base. It will also make it so much easier to transfer to the freezer.
  • Do not overfill your mold.
  • Chill your hot chocolate bombs for at least 30 minutes before handling them to ensure that they stay together.

🍲 Storage

To Store: Peppermint Hot Chocolate Bombs should be stored in an airtight container. I store my in the back of the fridge, but a pantry closet at room temperature works as well. (These are my favorite airtight containers.)

📖 Variations

The first time you try any new recipe we recommend that you make it just as it is written on the recipe card since that is how the hot chocolate bomb recipe has been tested. However, the next time you make our recipe, you might want to try one of these ideas:

  • Substitute the white chocolate for milk chocolate or dark chocolate melts if you prefer. You could even use red candy melts or look for peppermint candy melts.
  • Inside the hot cocoa bombs, you can also add mini marshmallows, mini chocolate chips, chocolate peppermint crunch bits.
  • Any sort of peppermint hard candy will work, or you can use crushed candy canes.

🍴 Serving Suggestions

To serve your hot cocoa, place one bomb into the bottom of a mug. Pour 1 cup of hot milk (or milk substitute) over the bomb and stir until the cocoa mixture is smooth. If you prefer, you can also make it with hot water, however, the cocoa will not be as creamy.

These are a great addition to a hot chocolate board along with Christmas snickerdoodles, OREO truffles, and whatever other treats you love!

Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup cocoa powder
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup peppermint candies crushed

Instructions

  • In a small bowl, mix together to cocoa, sugar, and peppermint candies. Set aside.

  • For the white chocolate peppermint hot cocoa combs, start with a clean and dry silicone mold on a baking sheet.
  • Melt the chocolate according to package directions.

  • Pour the chocolate into each well and use a spoon to evenly spread the chocolate right up to the edges.
  • Place the tray in the freezer for 5-10 minutes.
  • Remove from the freezer and add a second layer of chocolate anywhere that seems a bit thin, especially around the top rim of the circle.
  • Return to the freezer for 5 more minutes.
  • Remove the chocolate halves from the mold and set them on to the chilled tray from the freezer.
  • Add a 1/4 cup of the cocoa mix to three of the bombs.
  • Then gently melt the edges of the circles on a hot plate so you’ll have a smoother seam between the two halves. Repeat with the other halves.
  • Heat the edges of the empty halves again, one at a time, and set them onto one of the filled halves.
  • When all of the bombs are filled and sealed together you can drizzle the remaining melted chocolate on top.
  • Immediately sprinkle with the crushed peppermints and spinkles, if desired.

  • Set the finished bombs back in the fridge or freezer for a few minutes to help the chocolate drizzle harden.
  • To use the bombs: Heat 1 cup of milk to around 140 degrees Fahrenheit and carefully pour over the top of the bomb and then stir until smooth.

Making Hot Cocoa with a Peppermint Bomb

Heat your favorite milk to around 140-degrees F. Place the hot cocoa bomb into a mug and carefully pour the milk over the top of the bomb and stir until the cocoa is smooth.
If you prefer, you can also make it with hot water, however, the cocoa will not be as creamy.
