This collection of low-calorie smoothies includes more than just pulverized leafy greens. While we do have some great green smoothie recipes, you’ll also find great healthy breakfast and meal replacement options – and even a few that will help with those sweet cravings!

How To Make A Low Calorie Smoothie?

  • Liquid: Many smoothies call for some version of milk and you can use your favorite milk of choice. I often use unsweetened almond milk or coconut water. You can also use plain water. Avoid fruit juices which often have added sugar.
  • Fruit: I prefer thick smoothies so I most often use frozen fruit. However, you can use fresh fruit or a combination of fresh and frozen.

Optional extras. If you only have fresh fruit on hand, add a cup of ice to your smoothie ingredients. You can also add vegetables like spinach or carrots for added nutrition.

Tips

Using the right ingredients is key when you’re working on any diet. Here are a few tips for making low calorie smoothies:

  • To help meet your weight loss goals, substitute whole milk or coconut milk for unsweetened almond milk, coconut water, rice milk, hemp milk, soy milk, or cashew milk. Almond milk is usually my go-to because it’s lower in calories than cow’s milk and a good source of vitamin E.
  • Avoid added sugar whenever possible, or use a healthier alternative like maple syrup or honey.
  • Save calories by substituting low fat versions of your favorite Greek yogurt or vanilla yogurt. Look for nonfat or low-fat yogurt at the grocery store.
  • Protein gives you energy and helps you feel full longer. Make a low calorie protein smoothie by adding a coop of protein powder. You can also add non-fat Greek yogurt.
  • Be sure to load your blender correctly with the liquids on the bottom, then soft fruits and vegetables, ending with frozen items and then greens. This will make it easier to get a well blended smoothie.

Blender Recommendations

Vitamix: I have the older model of this and love it, except that it’s loud. I’m looking forward to upgrading soon! This heavy duty blender weighs 11.5lbs and has 1400 watts.

Ninja High-Speed Blender: I haven’t tried this one but it packs a punch with 1600 watts for a much lower price tag than the Vitamix. It’s also lighter at just 7.9lbs.

Hamilton Beach: I like this one for fresh fruit smoothies. It’s a good blender with 700 watts but sometimes not powerful enough for frozen items.
