For the big mac sauce, you can use a store-bought burger sauce or homemade burger sauce. You’ll need mayo, ketchup, sweet pickle relish, and dill pickle juice to make the special sauce.

⭐ Tips

✔️ Cut the potatoes into small uniform pieces so that they cook evenly.

✔️ If you are making this for a potluck or a party, leave the fresh veggies off until just before serving so they don’t get soggy.

🍲 Storage

To Store: Leftover Big Mac Casserole can be stored in an airtight container for 3-4 days in the fridge. However, it keeps best if the toppings are on the side as you don’t want to heat those. (These are my favorite airtight containers.)

To Reheat: Microwave individual portions in 30-second intervals until heated throughout.

📖 Variations

The first time you try any new recipe we recommend that you make it just as it is written on the recipe card since that is how the casserole recipe has been tested. However, the next time you make our recipe, you might want to try one of these ideas:

  • Substitute sweet potatoes or any other white potato you like. For a time save, I love using store-bought hashbrown potatoes.
  • For big mac tater tot casserole, leave out the russet potatoes and add tater tots on top of the cheese and ground beef mixture instead.
  • If you’re feeling decadent, stir 2 tablespoons of cream cheese or heavy cream into the beef mixture. This makes it extra creamy and cheesy!
  • To complete the big mac flavors, sprinkle a few sesame seeds on top before serving.
  • This recipe can also be made with ground chicken or ground pork.

A note about the delicious big mac sauce:

My family prefers sweet pickle relish but you can use any kind you like, or simply dice up pickles to go into the big mac sauce.

For a little kick, use our spicy ketchup to make the big mac sauce. (If you prefer, you can use thousand island dressing instead of making the sauce.)

    1. Yes, you can assemble the casserole ahead of time! I suggest letting the casserole come to room temperature before baking, or letting it bake a bit longer since it will be cold from the fridge. ENJOY!
