Confession, I’m kind of obsessed with gorgeous sugar cookies. There’s a mom at our school that makes the most incredible decorated cookies for every bake sale and event. I’m totally jealous of her icing talent!  But come on, what’s not to love about making treats for Halloween?

I love sugar cookies and these bats are a fun way to get in the kitchen and bake with the kiddos. You can make these that cute or spooky. This is a fairly simple Halloween baking project that is great to do with the kids.

Using fondant and a cutter that gives you indentations to follow makes the decorating process much easier than freehand icing and piping.

Spooky Bat Sugar Cookies

Ingredients

Here’s how to make these Spooky Bat Sugar Cookies:

  • butter
  • granulated sugar
  • egg
  • all-purpose flour
  • baking powder
  • teaspoon salt
  • vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350-degrees F.  Line the cookies sheets with a silicone baking mat, or parchment paper.
  2. In the bowl of an electric mixer, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.  Add the egg and mix well to combine.
  3. Stir in the dry ingredients and the vanilla and mix until the dough comes together.  Remove from the mixer and form into a ball.
  4. Chill the dough, covered, for 30 minutes in the refrigerator.
  5. Lightly flour your board and roll out the dough using a rolling pin.
  6. Using the Cake Boss Halloween Fondant Bat Cutter, cut the bat shapes out.

Do not press down on the spring.

Place onto the prepared baking sheet.  Bake for 8-10 minutes until the cookies are golden brown.  Remove to a cooling rack.

Decorating Materials + Instructions:

When the cookies are cooled all the way, decorate using fondant.  Here is what you will need:

  • Cake Boss Halloween Fondant Bat Cutter
  • Wilton White Fondant
  • Wilton Purple Icing Color (I like this Wilton Icing Set)
  • WiltonRed Sparkle Gel
  • Wilton Black Gel

Knead the white fondant in your hands for a few minutes before adding the black food coloring.  Continue kneading with your hands until the color is completely mixed throughout.

Use a fondant rolling pin or regular rolling pin to flatten a thin layer of the fondant, then cut out the bat shape.  As you push down on the Bat Cutter, press the spring button – this will create the 3-dimensional indentations of the bat into the fondant.

Secure the fondant onto the cookies with a thin line of the black gel.  Then, still using the black gel, carefully pipe the details you want to show black, such as on the eyes and wings.  Use the red sparkle gel to make the eyes pop.
