This holiday season, we are changing up our traditional sugar cookies to make them a little more festive! These ornament sugar cookies are the best Christmas cookies to make this year.
They look just like Christmas ornaments and would make a delicious plate of cookies for Santa, your kids, or your whole family to enjoy this year. These are so easy to make and a great sugar cookie recipe that will blow your taste buds away.
I love that this is an easy recipe that I can make with the kids and it doesn't take all day! Find your favorite sprinkles and cookie cutters and let's get baking!

🧂 Ingredients
Making adorable ornament sugar cookies starts with our Basic Sugar Cookie Dough.
- unsalted butter
- granulated sugar
- all-purpose flour
- salt
- baking powder
- eggs
- vanilla extract OR vanilla bean extract

🔪Instructions
- Cream butter and sugar until fluffy (about 5 mins) with a stand mixer.
- Add vanilla extract and eggs then mix well.
- Combine flour, baking powder, and salt together in a separate bowl.
- Gradually add flour to the butter mixture.
- Scrape down the sides of the bowl and mix until well combined.
- Divide dough into 2 sections.
- Roll one at a time on a lightly floured surface to ⅛ inch thickness.
- Next, cut into desired shapes using cookie cutters.
- Using a straw, cut out a hole in the top of the cookie. Gently wiggle the straw around to increase the size of the hole.
- Freeze the cookie shapes on the baking sheet for one hour.
- After that, preheat the oven to 375 degrees F.
- Bake for 8-10 minutes or until golden brown.
- Remove the cookies from the oven and use the straw again to open up the hole right away while the cookies are still hot and soft.
- Then, let sit on the cookie sheets for 10-15 mins before removing to finish cooling.
Decorating the Cookies
Once the cookies have cooled completely, you can decorate them with royal icing or buttercream as well as sprinkles.

To Store: Place cookies into an airtight container to stay fresh. They will last 4-7 days if properly stored. (These are my favorite airtight containers.)
To Freeze: You can freeze the cookie dough or undecorated cookies by putting them into a freezer bag.
To Thaw: Overnight in the fridge.
⭐ Tips
✔️For the smoothiest surface, turn the baked cookies upside down on the parchment paper as they cool.
✔️Allow the cookies to cool completely before decorating them.
✔️Slightly thicker ribbons tend to hold ornament cookies better than thin string.
✔️Be sure that the hole you make in the cookie dough is large enough for the ribbon you're using.
