Any mom knows that once baby arrives, sleep can be an elusive. Even now that my kids are older, I still find getting enough sleep to be challenging. Olivia, our 4-year-old, is a night-time ninja, stealthy sneaking into our bed at night. At first you don’t know she’s there, but then she fidgets, steals covers and pillows and sticks her feet into Mr. Juggling Act’s ribs. It makes sleep virtually impossible for the two of us. From there, it’s a series of back-and-forth trips to her room trying to get her to stay in her own bed. It’s totally exhausting.
I guess that’s why I identify with Jessica’s video so much. She too can fall asleep just fine, but struggles with interrupted sleep, also due to her daughter. Watch now:
Sometimes I can get back to sleep, and other times I’m up for the day at 2 or 3am. My brain makes a hundred lists and won’t seem to shut down again. Instead of being ready to greet the day, I find I’m hitting the snooze button and struggling to get out of bed. Then I’m cranky as we rush around to get everyone ready for school and work.
Beyondtired.org is a great resource for people who suffer from insomnia across the country with tips for getting more sleep. There are real people talking about their sleep struggles and how they have worked to overcome them. According to the website, “the amount of sleep you need may depend on a variety of factors, but the National Sleep Foundation recommends between 7 and 9 hours for adults aged 18 to 64 and between 7 and 8 hours for adults aged 65 and older.” I’m pretty sure I don’t get anywhere near that on a regular basis.
