Playroom Re-Do from Mommy Life After Ph.D

Hi friends!  My name is Jennifer and I blog over at Mommy Life After Ph.D where we talk about the craziness that is life with the Crazies--aka our four kids ages five and under.  Let's just say they offer LOTS of bloggy fodder! Today, Ang has given me the awesome opportunity to share a little project I've had going on for a while at the house. I say 'a while' because we've actually been in this house for nearly TWO YEARS--and I had (HAD!) yet to fully organize/decorate our playroom.

    It was bad wasn't it.

We had too little storage, NO decor, no theme, no fun! I pretty much despised the room in general.

But here's the thing: I'm a self-proclaimed (and friend approved) non-crafter.  Give me a glue gun and within seconds I will have burnt ⅔ of my fingers and adhered all surrounding fabrics to the under side of a counter.  Don't ask.

So I decided to proceed with caution in this little adventure.  And by 'caution' I mean extremely slowly. Sloth-like, I have been in this interior design foray .

But the good news is, it has paid off, and now we are the official inhabitants of a home where at least one room is fully decorated. I may just move a bed in there and sleep in it.

    Maybe the dining room table?

Anyway, I'm proud of these little spaces we've created and hope they give you some inspiration for your room.  Without further ado...

...I give you, the play room.
    Window Seat/Valance and Gallery Wall

The playroom is doorless and it can be seen from our front door. Aside from the fact that I have to do marathon toy-shoving-into-random-bins when visitors arrive, it also means that I wanted to keep the walls in plain view presentable. Not too kiddie. You know what I mean?  'Cause I love my kids.

I don't love the rainbow colors associated with ALL of their belongings.

Enter the window seat, valance, and coordinating gallery wall.

I did a whole post on that little window seat as well as the gallery wall, and the valance tutorial is coming soon to the blog!

(Don't you just LOVE those fabrics?!? Me too!)

    Reading Nook

I loved this idea from Courtney over at Crafts By Courtney, so I put my own spin on it with inexpensive IKEA shelves, some white craft-store letters, and our favorite books.  Add in a little seating via pillows from IKEA and one I made from the bench seat fabric and call this cozy little nook done.

    Dream & Believe Nook

I think this is my absolute favorite aspect of the whole room.  Using left over wood and spray paint from the bench, my trusty sidekick (aka the hubby) slapped up some hardware store closet brackets, then we added the shelf and closet rod, et voila--the perfect space for storing all those dress-up clothes and hats that were otherwise wadded up in a bin or toy box.

I added some craft canvases covered with scrapbook paper and painted the pre-made wooden phrases for a personal touch.

    STORAGE

Did you notice that word is in all caps? Yeah, because it's kind of the most important element to the room.

We have storage from 1. the IKEA wall unit complete with bins and spaces for books and larger toys. Then there's 2. the bin o' balls--a JoAnn Fabrics find, 3. the bin o' leftover dress-up clothes--a steal at around $15 from TJ Maxx, 4. the hat shelf/hanging area in the Dream & Believe Nook, and 5. the super sneaky storage space beneath the train table.

All toys in there place? Check!

Seating+Fun Storage+Colorful Decor=A Space the Whole Family Can Enjoy!

By the way, can you tell the girls are slightly outnumbered in our house?  Don't worry, there's a whole bedroom designed by Pinkalicious herself elsewhere.

What about you? What are your favorite play room/kids' room decor and storage solutions? What else can I add to the room? Help me, oh crafty ones!

In the meantime, I'll be lounging on that window seat, eating bon-bons, reading board books, and wearing a plastic fireman hat.  When in Rome!
