The other night, I was looking for a simple, but different sort of project to do with Ethan. Livi has been taking little cat naps before dinner, which means that if I hurry (or throw a pizza in the oven), I have time to do something special with Ethan.
Art work piles up in our house, and it seems like we just don't have enough magnets to hold up all the creations.
Clothespin Caterpillar Magnets seemed like the perfect solution! They are super simple and a great way to work on counting or colors, too.
Clothespin Caterpillar Magnets
Materials:
- clothespins
- strong magnets
- pom poms
- googly eyes
- E6000 glue or other craft glue
- green glitter glue
Tips
- When you get the pom poms and googly eyes, think about the sizes of them together... also, the bigger the pom poms, the fewer will fit on the clothespin.
- Starting with a strong glue, like E6000, adhere the magnets to one side of the clothespin and allow to dry. This is best done a few hours or the the night before you want to make the craft with your kiddo. You can do it afterward, but it's a little trickier that way. Also, it's my personal opinion that that type of glue is for grown ups only.
Once the glue on the magnets has set, you're ready to begin the kid-friendly part.
To glue the pom poms, Ethan wanted to use green glitter glue to so it would look like grass under the caterpillars.
With the magnet side down, draw a thin line of glue along the clothespin.
Stick the pom poms on - this is the most fun, I think. I had fun making patterns with mine, while Ethan enjoyed cramming as many as he could fit onto his.
Let the clothespins rest for a bit, then using the E6000 glue again, stick two googly eyes on the pom pom that is to be the head - the one closest to end that opens and closes.
Once everything sets, get ready to display your artwork in a cool new way.
It's as simple as that! By the way, these would be a great little party favor for birthday parties, too.
