Earlier this week, my sister sent me brief email about Target Recalling Half a Million Pajamas.
ACK!
I shop at Target all-the-time - I love their PJ's... are you kidding me??
So, being the responsible and diligent mother than I am, I did some investigating at the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission website. Oh man.
Again, I thought, I shop at Target all-the-time - I love their PJ's... are you kidding me??
So then I proceeded to tear through the kid's dressers (and about 4 baskets of clean, folded laundry), searching for pajamas. (which is different from my usual nightly ritual of tearing through drawers and baskets to find things, because this time I didn't top when I found two sets of clean matching ones, I kept going until I'd looked at every tag and label on the kid's pjs.)
Meanwhile, Mr. Juggling Act sat calmly reading to Ethan and Olivia.
When I plunked down a pile of (gasp) recalled pj's, he didn't bat an eye.
"What are you doing?" he asked.
I wanted to yell - Um, hello, I'm getting rid of the lethal pjs, of course. But instead I re-read him the recall notice.
"So those are all not flame resistant?"
"No!"
"But they say right on them that they're not flame resistant, right?"
Uh oh, he's getting all technical and logical on me...
"Well, yes... but the recall... it's bad, right? I mean, not to be flame resistant, right? I mean, we should return them... right?" What I mean to say is, I am right, RIGHT?

No response.
So I gather up all the PJ's and trudge off to Target.
At the Service Desk, they don't know what I'm talking about. Like a crazed lunatic, I try to tell them that they have recalled more than half a million pjs.
"They did?" says the confused associate, and I think to myself, yes lady, YOUR company did. Don't they put out memo's or something about this?
Now the manager comes over and she says they have to call some central Target office and describe each pair of pjs to them to see if they're are really part of the recall.
Ugh.
As if this wasn't a big enough pain in the tush already. Thank goodness I left the kids home with Mr. Juggling Act.
Now, after all that drama, guess what?
None of our pjs are part of the recall. Not one single pair.
Ugh... Does this mean I'm not right?

Did you have any of the recalled PJ's? What was your experience?
I didn't even look through them. Maybe I am a bad mother, but she has other pj's that aren't fire resistant. I think the recall was because they didn't have the tag on them that said make sure they are tightly fitting because they aren't fire resistant.n
ReplyDeleteP.S. There are at least three nights a week where my child does not wear a matching set of pj's because I am too lazy to search for a matching top and bottom. Once again, maybe I am a bad mother...:)
The funny thing is that the recall is that the size doesn't work. Doesn't that mean you could just as easily try it on the kids, check if it is loose, and if it is, put it in the back of the closet for a bit till it fits them snugger?
ReplyDeleteHave you read what kind of chemicals are in that fire retardant stuff? Now that is something to be scared about!
ReplyDeleteKeep in mind, even the fire retardant ones lose their flame resistance if you use fabric softener of any sort, so the reality is that most pjs are probably not flame resistant any more. However, I always do panic when I see recalls that affect me or might affect me. I had to check several of our Christmas pjs since I knew I bought them at Target. Fortunately none were affected by the recall. I still remember how awful I felt when my oldest was a baby and I discovered a recall for a choking hazard on the very outfit she was wearing that day.
ReplyDeleteThat was a really funny story Ang! You are a very concerned and "take action parent!! As a grandmother, I just want to remind you all, that this was not even on the radar back in my day of raising 4 little beauties! You were a good mom if you had dinner together around the table, but a cool Mom if it was on a T.V. tray in front of the teeny tiny T.V. we had, with 4 channels. You were a great Mom if you made sure they washed up in the tub, but a fun MOM if they got to "swim" (which we all know just means "splash, until the bathroom floor, and walls are drenched. You were a "concerned about their education Mom" if you took the time to read to them, but a mesmerizing Mom if you made up stories to tell them with their rhyming sing-song names, as the main characters. And it was a win-win if all the girls just WORE pj's, even if there was a fight or two about "hey, she's wearing MY NIGHTGOWN AGAIN!" But if you really want to be remembered as a caring, loving Mom, just sing their favorite songs to them every night, (even when you are too exhausted too}, and after they are long gone and all grown up with kids of their own, sometimes they will still want to lay their head in your lap, beg you to caress their hair, and yes sing them a song!
ReplyDeleteGlad yours weren't recalled, but that sounds like a headache.
ReplyDeleteIt is always better to be safe rather than sorry, especially when it comes to product recalls that apply to your little ones. You did go through a major hassle though.
